1. The internet was originally invented by two guys and it was origianlly called the graphical internet.

2. There is a server controlled by your ISP. When you type www.apple.com that plus the location of your computer is sent to that server where it goes through its data base of which is a list of all the web sites on the internet and there location. When www.apple.com is found a message is sent to that computer saying send apple.com to your location.
